Verse

kasāyehi baṁdho hoi ṇa ca jogehi akasāyīṇaṁ
ṇiccaṁ hi pavattaṁtaṁ taṁ kammaṁ ṇijjara vajjaṁ

Simple Meaning ·

Bondage is caused by the *kaṣāyas* (passions), not by *yoga* (mere activity) alone. For one who is free of passion, even continuous activity becomes karma-shedding, not karma-binding.

  • 1.Acharya Kundakunda — kaṣāya identified as the operative cause of bondage; activity (yoga) without passion produces only minimal īryāpatha āsrava, which is shed in the next instant.
  • 2.On the four kaṣāyas as the chief cause of new karmic bondage.
  • 3.Acharya Pujyapada develops the precise mechanism: kaṣāya intensifies the duration and intensity of bound karma; without kaṣāya, no significant bondage occurs.
